This front page Financial Times article explains how Salinas and the Steinbeck Innovation Cluster are working to create smart farms.

It highlights the anticipated growth in global population and how food production needs to double to feed 9 billion people by 2050. It discusses soil sensors, devices that track contamination and drones being considered for deploying pesticides. The article also states that the Steinbeck initiative aims to align interests of big tech companies with large agricultural groups to research and test technical developments before using venture capitalists to help take them mainstream.

The following quotes sum up the story well:

John Hartnett, a partner at SVG Partners in San Jose and founder of the Steinbeck project, said the marriage of talents and capital between the Silicon and Salinas Valleys would help develop new technologies: “This is an opportunity to connect them together.”

“It’s a hidden gem under the nose of Silicon Valley,” Mr Hartnett said.
