Bloomberg Businessweek features Salinas’ Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association (ALBA)

Bloomberg Businessweek recently spotlighted Salinas Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association in a Dec. 3, 2012, article, titled, “Program trains farmworkers to be organic farmers.” The Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association (ALBA) is a program that that trains farmworkers to operate their own organic farms. Eighty small farm businesses have been launched since the initiative began in 2001, and the organization also serves as an agricultural incubator that leases farmland and discounts farming equipment.

The program is significant because it mentors Hispanic immigrants to become entrepreneurs and run their own businesses. With the U.S.’s renewed focus on healthy diets and organic food, farming can be a profitable endeavor for these new operators and a boon for Salinas. As one program leader was quoted, "A lot of farmworkers are working tirelessly to invest in their children's futures, but ALBA gives them the opportunity to improve their lives within their lifetime.”
